Margin

Privacy Policy

Effective 20 July 2026

Margin is a journal. What you write in it stays on your phone. There is no account, no profile, no tracking, and nothing to sign up for.

The short version. Your entries are stored only on your device. We cannot read them. The single exception is the monthly reflection: if you subscribe and ask for one, that month’s entries are sent to be summarised and are not kept afterwards.

What stays on your device

Everything you write — your daily lines, your moods, your reminder time, and any reflection you have generated — is stored in a database file on your phone. It is not uploaded to us and we have no way to access it.

If you have iCloud Backup or Google Auto Backup switched on, that file is included in your device’s normal backup, in the same way as other app data. That backup is between you and Apple or Google; we are not part of it and cannot see it.

The monthly reflection

Subscribers can ask Margin to read a month back to them. Only when you tap that button, and only for that month, the following happens:

We do not store your entries or the reflection on our server. They are held in memory only for as long as the request takes. Anthropic processes the text to produce the response and does not use it to train their models. The only thing our server keeps is a counter recording that your anonymous subscriber identifier generated a reflection this month, so the once-a-month limit can be enforced. That counter contains no journal content and expires automatically.

If you never tap that button, no part of your journal ever leaves your phone.

Subscriptions

Purchases are handled by Apple or Google and by RevenueCat, which tells the app whether a subscription is active. RevenueCat identifies your device by a randomly generated anonymous identifier. We do not collect your name, email address, or payment details, and we never see your card.

What we do not do

Notifications

The daily reminder is scheduled locally on your device. No notification is sent from a server and nothing about your writing habits is transmitted.

Your control

You can export your entire journal at any time from Settings, as JSON or CSV. Deleting the app removes the journal from your device permanently — so export first if you want to keep it. Because we hold no copy, there is nothing for us to delete on your behalf.

Children

Margin is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the revised version will be posted here with a new effective date. Material changes will be noted in the app.
